Bidirectional
A bidirectional parallel port was added to Acorn machines starting with the A5000 in 1991. Certain peripherals require a bidirectional parallel port, and as a result are incompatible with older machines.

Third-party upgrades
Third-party drivers exist for interfacting with standard PCI and PCI Express parallel port cards on RISC OS.[1][2] A parallel port HAT also exists for use with the Raspberry Pi under RISC OS.[3]
